<br />
I started this blog back in 2011 with determination and high hopes that I could create a 5 year plan that would enable me to relocate to Paris upon my retirement in 2016.<br />
<br />
After researching the subject for several years it became overwhelming clear that I would not be able to accomplish my goal. I came to the conclusion that sadly, <b><i><span style="font-size: large;">for me,</span></i></b> it would not be possible to live in Paris on a small fixed income derived mostly from social security.<br />
<br />
The cost of living is very high in Paris and the paperwork to live as an expat is a bit more than I care to tackle.<br />
<br />
What I am looking for is a place where I can live BETTER than I live here in the U.S for less money.<br />
<br />
So, with that, I say good bye to my Paris blog. I will not make any new posts but will leave what I have researched for those who follow.<br />
<br />
BTW - don't be sad for me because as the old saying goes<br />
"when one door closes another opens"<br />
<br />
Our new retirement location is <span style="font-size: large;"><b><a href="http://itchyfeet2.com/">Costa Rica</a></b></span>.<br />
<br />
We are very excited about the move and beginning a new life in a beautiful country, with a slower pace of life.<br />
<br />
Of course I have a new blog about our move there in 2016<br />
<br />
If you are interested you can find me there <a href="http://blackincostarica.com/">The Aspiring Expats</a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
See you there!</div>

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 1.48em;">Padlocks began appearing on bridges in Paris and other European cities more than five years ago left by people seeking to symbolise their enduring love - often inscribed with couples' names. I especially love candid street photos. Those photographs which capture ordinary people or objects in ordinary situations. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 22px;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 22px;">Today I cam across the story of a woman who worked as a nanny in NYC. She had been taking street photos for years and no one knew about them until a young man purchased 10,000 undeveloped negatives at a local auction for $380. Little did he know of the phenomenal find he had discovered. </span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 22px;">Vivian Maier was an American of French and Austro-Hungarian extraction, Vivian bounced between Europe and the United States before coming back to New York City in 1951. Having picked up photography just two years earlier, she would comb the streets of the Big Apple refining her artistic craft.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 22px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Sometime in 1949, while still in France, Vivian began toying with her first photos. I hear so many wonderful things about the city and when I am there, wow....I'm in heaven. But, when I'm there I am a visitor, a tourist, living in a fabulous rented apartment in Saint Germain for 10 days. Shopping in all the trendy boutiques, eating at the finest restaurants, sightseeing and staying out late and sleeping in. I don't speak the language that well, but good enough to get by for 10 days.<br />
<br />
But, what do people who live in Paris really think about life in Paris?<br />

I happened to be over on a blog I follow, called <a href="http://imported-chocolate.com/"><b>Imported Chocolate</b></a>. Jennifer, the owner/blogger, travels quite a bit and I have communicated with her on a number of occasions about living in Buenos Aires. She provides really honest and informative feedback and the one <b>BIG</b> plus for me about talking to Jennifer, is, that she is also a black woman. Unfortunately, we do not yet live in a color blind society so if you are <i><b>TWB</b></i> (traveling while black) its good to understand the 411 in the places that you visit.<br />
<br />
Anyway Jennifer recently posted 2 excellent interviews.I found them both <i>très intéressant</i><br />

<br />
In the meantime here's <a href="http://imported-chocolate.com/2013/12/12/tour-the-city-of-paris-without-leaving-your-home/">her post </a>with video about Paris<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"This is seriously one of the coolest things I’ve discovered on Youtube! A filmmaker explored Paris with his HD camera and cut the footage into a fifty-minute walking tour. The picture and sound quality is so sharp, you feel like you’re walking on the street.
I felt like a fly on the wall, like I was people watching the citizens of Paris and checking out the sights and sounds from the comfort of my own home. It was fun spotting all the fierce elderly French women and eyeing the fashonistas. I hope I age just as gracefully as they have.
This filmmaker has videos for other countries: Spain, Israel, Canada and many more. Now put this baby in full screen mode and go on your Paris walking tour! Bon Voyage!
P.S"

One of the reasons I love to go to Paris is because of its past history of inclusion for African Americans. Lately I've been hearing some things that have disturbed me.<br />
<br />
Here is the latest incident. I'm not sure why some white people get such a kick out of blackface. Boggles my mind!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Blackface scandal strikes, and bewilders, France</span></div>

When a French lifestyle journalist posted a photo of herself in blackface last week, it sparked outrage on social media sites and some bemusement over the uproar in France.<br /><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
In the latest racism outcry to rock France, a French lifestyle journalist posted a photograph of herself in blackface, sparking howls of protest on social media sites – and some bewilderment over the uproar in her native France.<br /><br />Jeanne Deroo, a beauty editor at Elle France, posted a photo on Instagram last weekend, which featured her with darkened skin and an Afro wig – an image disconcertingly reminiscent of the theatrical blackface makeup popular in the 19th century.</blockquote>

<br />
Maybe you heard about some of the Hollywood stars who thought it was funny to dress up in blackface this past Halloween. Well, it's NOT funny and here's why....<br /><br />The history of blackface minstrelsy isn’t talked about regularly today. Until we actively remember the ugliness of this history, people will continue to blacken their faces without recognizing the horror hidden beneath the paint.<br />
<br />
Minstrelsy desensitized Americans to horrors of chattel slavery. These performances were object lessons about the harmlessness of southern slavery. By encouraging audiences to laugh, they showed bondage as an appropriate answer for the lazy, ignorant slave. Why worry about the abolition of slavery when black life looked so fun, silly, and carefree? Even the violence of enslavement just became part of the joke.<br />

But, I have to admit, I am completely lost when it comes to the wine list. Last time we were in Paris we rented and apartment and shopped for our food and wine in the neighborhood. When we got to the alcohol section, we were completely lost. There was shelf after shelf of wines we had never heard of and had NO idea what they tasted like or which one to choose.<br />
We ended up just picking a few bottles (which turned out to be pretty good). Not sure you can go too very wrong with French wine, however here are some tips if you don't want to leave it all up to chance.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4JmJx4Kfajbduf_mfHHFxPrdDNC8GawWfAjHzIvIpiVmsBroXJrSfp9SCEtrqoAZGf4cs3ErVicrtGlVkzii1p4iY1KUg2053NdD15RYgH7tu1U6PRRMqqF0BLsw-A79gJDxmzC-KNRUp/s1600/wine+red.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4JmJx4Kfajbduf_mfHHFxPrdDNC8GawWfAjHzIvIpiVmsBroXJrSfp9SCEtrqoAZGf4cs3ErVicrtGlVkzii1p4iY1KUg2053NdD15RYgH7tu1U6PRRMqqF0BLsw-A79gJDxmzC-KNRUp/s640/wine+red.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #474747; line-height: 14px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #474747; line-height: 14px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Getting The Wine You Crave</span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="line-height: 14px; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: #474747; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8mWxLb3hVUbz5sEjzFWYoX-wy4966rUd1QtoUe3qweIk0gA0C2SKhyphenhyphentHkxEa6wd0NGWKQnJnP1wYYTRKCiuw3JeiFxghZYljocoPQNeEOhKYQw1E3zhVyLRwHCBm188i9IvpIK-fwqUH-/s1600/wine.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8mWxLb3hVUbz5sEjzFWYoX-wy4966rUd1QtoUe3qweIk0gA0C2SKhyphenhyphentHkxEa6wd0NGWKQnJnP1wYYTRKCiuw3JeiFxghZYljocoPQNeEOhKYQw1E3zhVyLRwHCBm188i9IvpIK-fwqUH-/s200/wine.jpg" width="152" /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: none; color: #474747; font-family: 'Century Gothic'; font-size: small;">.</span></a></div>
</div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #474747; line-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />In France, the wine list in restaurants is organized by regions not by types such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, etc.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #474747; line-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />Here's a list of equivalents:</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #474747; line-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />If you like <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Chardonnay</span></b> - order a Burgundy</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #474747; line-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span"></span><br />
<div style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span">Chardonnay is originally from France’s Burgundy region, where the best white Burgundies are powerful and rich, with complex fruit flavors and notes of earth and minerals. More affordable Chardonnays from Burgundy—for instance, those simply labeled Bourgogne Blanc—are crisp and lively, with apple and lemon flavors.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span">Pair Chardonnays in the leaner Burgundian style with roasted chicken or seafood; the more voluptuous New World Chardonnays pair well with pasta dishes made with cream or cheese, with lobster or other rich seafood and with Asian dishes that include coconut milk. <a href="http://www.foodandwine.com/articles/wine-101-chardonnay-and-white-burgundy">source </a></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;"></span>Here's the plot to The Last Tango in Paris - 1972<br />
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0.4em;">
Paul, a middle-aged American hotel owner mourning his wife's suicide, meets a young, engaged Parisian woman named Jeanne in an apartment that both are interested in renting. They proceed to have an anonymous sexual relationship in the apartment, and Paul demands that neither of them share any personal information, not even their names. The affair goes on until one day Jeanne comes to the apartment to find that Paul has packed up and left without warning.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif-rwjfb5oCUdUy3uEvVzabFAbB9oswobCnDB1sFI12AH-EipMFaQ15BMFGobpxkYsk2pgpUTcAzWzJaA0vrZRSE3OkPY1weBClCZUwC2k1V7BbrHFA6RsVyrzbYHWw3usgl_aOtkparyT/s1600/last-tango-in-paris-movie-.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif-rwjfb5oCUdUy3uEvVzabFAbB9oswobCnDB1sFI12AH-EipMFaQ15BMFGobpxkYsk2pgpUTcAzWzJaA0vrZRSE3OkPY1weBClCZUwC2k1V7BbrHFA6RsVyrzbYHWw3usgl_aOtkparyT/s320/last-tango-in-paris-movie-.jpg" width="212" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0.4em;">
Paul later meets Jeanne on the street and says he wants to renew the relationship. He tells her of the recent tragedy with his wife, and the telling of his life story carries them to a tango bar, where he continues telling her about himself. The loss of anonymity disillusions Jeanne about their relationship, and she tells Paul she does not want to see him again. Paul, not wanting to let Jeanne go, chases her back to her apartment, where he tells her he loves her and wants to know her name.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0.4em;">
<div style="line-height: 1.5em;">
Jeanne takes a gun from a drawer. She tells Paul her name and shoots him. Paul staggers out onto the balcony, mortally wounded, and collapses. As Paul dies, a dazed Jeanne mutters to herself that he was just a stranger who tried to rape her, that she did not know who he was, as if in a rehearsal, preparing herself for questioning by the police.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;"></span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 1.5em;">The film premiered in New York City on October 14, 1972, to enormous public controversy. After local government officials failed to ban the film in Montclair, NJ, theatergoers had to push through a mob of 200 outraged residents, who hurled epithets like "perverts" and "homos" at the attendees. Later, a bomb threat temporarily halted the showing. The New York chapter of the National Organization for Women denounced the film as a tool of "male domination."</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0.4em;">
The film's scandal centred mostly on an anal sex scene featuring the use of butter as a lubricant. Other critics focussed on when the character Paul asks Jeanne to insert her fingers in his anus, then exacts a vow from her that she would prove her devotion to him by, among other things, having sex with a pig. Vincent Canby of <i>The New York Times </i>described the film's sexual content as the artistic expression of the "era of Norman Mailer and Germaine Greer."<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 22px;">The idea came from the Italians and started in Milan. The Italians (who are known as the world’s biggest consumers of sparkling water) installed 215 fountains in the country’s northern regions. So, it only makes sense that their neighbor, France, would try out the popular idea. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 22px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">The French consume about 40 gallons of bottled water per person each year, one of the highest per capita amounts not only in Europe, but also in the world.</span></span><br />
